Building a Better Business model for eBay Based Businesses: Part two of eBay Arbitrage
By admin | September 2, 2010
So what?s wrong with the idea of going to garage sales and flee markets and searching for ?nick-knacks? to sell on eBay. Well in my opinion?A LOT. Like I mentioned in my previous article; useless, discarded items that nobody wants, do not gain magical value just because you post them on eBay.
I know what you are thinking, but if I post them on eBay then millions of people will be able to see them and there is bound at least one person in these millions who would be willing to pay top dollar to get this item, right?
Well yes and no. As of today, 12/19/2006, there are over 2 hundred million registered eBay users worldwide. What you should remember is that just because there are over 2 hundred million users registered does not mean that each and every one of those users will visit eBay?s site today.
So if X is the total number of registered users on eBay, then it is safe to assume that there is some number Y that is smaller than X, which represents the total number of registered users who will visit eBay?s site today. Why do I assume Y is smaller than X. I assume this because Y is a percentage of X, unless of course you think that 100% of the registered users might visit eBay?s site today.
So let?s consider this number Y. If Y, registered users will visit eBay?s site today, then how many people out of Y will actually view the category(s) which your item may be listed in? For example I visited eBay?s site today, however I did not view any of the following categories: antiques, digital cameras, video games or rings. Just because a user visits the site on any given day that your item is listed on the site, does not mean that they will view any of the categories that your item is listed in. I will call the number of users who view at least one of the categories your item is listed in, on any given day, the number Z. I will assume that Z is usually less than Y.
Don?t get me wrong most eBay listings are up for several days if not longer, so usually you will get more than a single day to sell your item. But the point that I am trying to make is that just because eBay has millions of users does not mean that millions of people will see any given item which you may list with eBay. Let?s say that you purchased an item at a flee market to sell on eBay. It may be possible that less people see your item while it is listed on eBay then did at the flee market where you bought the item. I am not saying that this is usually the case, but I think it is important for you to acknowledge the possibility.
Do you know what happens when you list an item and it does not sell? You are still responsible for paying your eBay listing fees. So if your item does not sell you take a loss on that auction attempt. Don?t get me wrong there are definitely lot?s of opportunity to profit on eBay, all I am saying is that in my opinion your business model should be more sophisticated then the oversimplified ?go to garage sales in order to buy items to list and sell on eBay?.
How do you come up with a better business model for building a profitable business on eBay? I will discuss this issue in upcoming articles, so stay tuned. Here is my advice for now, if you are serious about building a profitable eBay business understand that it will not be, in my opinion, a way to get rich quick. Like any business you should expect it to take work and determination. Most importantly realize that there is almost always a learning curve involved and be prepared to learn from your mistakes. Also as I almost always suggest, start small and build gradually.
One thing which I would strongly suggest is that you consider developing you eBay business around a specific niche. Why is it important to have a niche for your eBay based business? I will be addressing this issue in one of my upcoming articles.
Best wishes for your success on eBay,
Philip Weslow.
